In
Bangladesh, per capita consumption of paper is
gradually increasing with the increase of literacy
along with the incremental growth of its population.
So long the paper sector was dominated by the
public sectorial mills. But shortage of indigenous
fibrous raw materials and other factors affected
the productivity resulting closure of paper mills
under the public sector. Thus the difference of
demand and supply has increased and the huge deficit
of paper is met through import. In view of improving
the situation the Government is encouraging the
private sector to set up more paper mills by using
alternative raw materials.
Bangladesh
National Paper Mills Ltd. (BNPM), an unit of Bangladesh
Development Group, is being set up with the vision
of producing different grades of import substitutes
Cultural and Industrial papers by using mostly
secondary fibres. Bangladesh Development Group
has rich experience in production and marketing
of paper & paper Products. The expertise of the
group will be better utilized for the greater
interest of the country through commercial operation
of the project. Production of import substitute
paper in Bangladesh National Paper Mills will
invariably reduce the volume of import of paper
substantially. The foreign exchange thus saved
may be utilized for other developmental works.
Moreover, such project will also create job opportunity
for a large number of people.
